CALL FOR PAPERS
1988 PICTURE CODING SYMPOSIUM
Torino – Italy, 12-14 September 1988
You are invited to participate in the 1988 Picture Coding Symposium, to be held at Torino, Italy, Monday to Wednesday of 12, 13 and 14 September 1988.
Papers containing new, original and unpublished material of research character are solicited. Summaries of papers will be published and made available at the conference.
The primary interest of the symposium, fifteenth of the series, is in the coding of pictures for application areas such as broadcast, moving pictures, videoconferencing, picture phone, still picture transmission/storage, facsimile etc.
For these and other coding applications the symposium will cover the following areas of investigation.
- HUMAN OBSERVER
Properties of the visual system, relevant to picture coding. - FEATURE EXTRACTION AND PICTURE PROCESSING
Covers areas such as edge detection, texture classification, motion estimation/representation, noise reduction, image quality enhancement etc. - MODELING AND SYNTHESIS
Covers topics of 2-D and 3-D modeling of pictures, in particular of the human body and algorithms to synthesise such pictures. - CODING OF STILL PICTURES
Coding of facsimile, black-and-white and colour still pictures. - CODING OF MOVING PICTURES
Coding for HDTV, broadcast TV, movies coding, videoconferencing, picture phone and other kinds of moving picture material. - ERROR PROTECTION
Channel error protection methods for transmission of pictorial data. - ARCHITECTURES AND LSI FOR PICTURE CODING
Picture coding architectures and their implementations in LSI circuits. - IMPLEMENTATION
Hardware realisations of units suitable for picture coding applications. - SYSTEMS AND APPLICATIONS
Complete systems and applications areas containing picture coding.

Preliminary information
Complete and return the enclosed Planning Questionnaire to the address below before 11 December 1987
Title and Summary
Prospective authors are asked to submit for review by 12 February 1988 a preliminary summary of the paper in English. The title and the author’s name and full address should precede the summary. The summary should be no more than two A4 pages (297×210 mm). You are requested to leave a 33 mm left margin and use good printing quality.
Notice of acceptance will be given by 15 April 1988. Authors who wish to revise their summaries should submit these no later than 13 May 1988.

Registration and Accomodation
Details concerning registration and accomodation will be sent to all those who indicate an interest by returning the enclosed preliminary information sheet.
Other activities
All symposium participants will receive a list of addresses for technical visits.
Participants will also have the possibility to join the European Signal Processing Conference EUSIPCO ’88 (Grenoble, 05-08 September 1988) and the Second International Symposium on Packet Video Communication (Torino, 08-09 September 1988). Announcements of the two conferences are enclosed.
SYMPOSIUM PROGRAM
The official language of the symposium will be English. No parallel sessions are planned. Two types of presentations will be used, oral and poster presentations.
Oral presentation
About 15 minutes will be allotted to each oral presentation, including questions and discussions. Overhead projector and 35 mm slide projector will be available. Other means of visual aids may be provided on request.
Poster presentation
It is intended to focus the attention on the poster sessions. Each poster will be displayed during one whole day. During the poster sessions (about 1.5 hours), the author stands by the poster for questions and discussion. No other activities are planned to take place during the poster sessions.
U-matic video cassette players will be provided on request.
Poster presentations offer several advantages over oral presentations:
- The material is available to the audience during a long time;
- Attendees can study the material at his/her own convenience;
- Graphs and photos are available for detailed inspection and study;
- It is more likely that the author will be able to discuss the
- work with others who have a direct interest and knowledge in the same area.
